Extended family (16 of us) enjoyed the lovely outdoor patio and cozy fire pits. Drinks were beautifully crafted, food was wonderful, as well as the service. (I would have rated 5 stars, but the lack of indoor table distancing and no limits on customers during the pandemic was a bit of safety concern for us going inside to use the restroom).

This experience was a disappointment. We were led to believe that this was a 5/5 for dinner. The food was good, but not outstanding in any way. Full disclosure, we had the fried chicken. Their steaks may be better, but the prices they are asking for steaks are too much to gamble on. 115 bucks for a Tomahawk steak that takes nearly an hour to arrive is a big ask for a place of this caliber. This is in Kansas City, literally the beating heart of steak country, so go get a giant cut like that at the butchers and save yourself a nice bit of coin. The service was pretty bad. We are not from the area, which is affluent, so we might have been underdressed, but it really shouldn't have made a difference. We were dressed casually. The drinks took way too long to arrive, and after making the order, we didn't see our waitress at our table but three more times. The first time, when we asked for more water, which never arrived. The second time she appeared, apparently with check in hand, to ask if we needed anything boxed up instead of asking if we wanted to order dessert or coffee (missed opportunity). Regardless, we asked for the banana cream pie (pictured), which was worthy of a college cafeteria at best. And finally, the waitress arrived when it was time to pay. As soon as I laid down my card though, it was snapped up. That was an indication to us that she wasn't too busy, but that perhaps we weren't worth her time. The icing on the cake was that it took far too long to get my card back. People have bad days, so who knows what was going on, but there was never an apology for the wait, nor even an acknowledgement for it.For all the great reviews this place gets, the expectations were fairly high. I've had better service at more pedestrian establishments. Skip this place unless you are a local with more money than sense.

Review №3

Good, but not worth the price. Stick with some of the less expensive things on the menu then you might be alright. 801 Chophouse is similar in price and much tastier. Ombiance and decor also felt too casual for the prices they were charging. Good food, but needs to be great for the prices they charge. Mashed potatoes were yummy

Review №4

Ordered my steak rare and actually got it rare. This sounds like a given, but most places I eat serve it either medium rare or still cold in the center, so I was pleased.Food was delicious.

Review №5

Is is always the case, Rye did not disappoint. Absolutely everything we had was awesome, particularly the goat cheese appetizer. Had a hard time finishing my meal because of it!

Review №6

Nice atmosphere, excellent, food, and wonderful service. The Koji-aged Berkshire Pork Rib Chop and the Chicken and Dumplings are good menu choices. I also had a piece of their lemon meringue pie. Best lemon meringue pie I have had in my life. The bill was steep, around $85 (my husband also had a glass of wine), but it was worth the money.

Review №7

This place was fabulous! KC is such an underrated food town! Server was pleasant and attentive! The whipped goat cheese was stellar and the shrimp and grits were on point! They also make in house hot sauce! Next time I'm in KC, this place will definitely get my business

Review №8

Excellent service and atmosphere. Had the chicken wings, domestic cheese plate, fried green tomatoes with rock shrimp, and goat cheese appetizers. All phenomenal! For dinner I had the 10oz Ribeye with the mashed potatoes. The steak was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. Truly an amazing cut of meat. To finish my night I had key lime pie which was also delicious. I'll be back ! The menu is so diverse and creative and the chef really knows amazing and interesting flavor combinations.

Review №9

The food is constantly fresh and delightful, staff members gives excellent customer service. I love how clean it is and mood. I highly recommend this place.

Review №10

The original location of this restaurant is quite lovely. They're doing a great job about keeping everyone safe during the Covid19 pandemic. They've got excellent fried chicken and I absolutely love their cakes.

Review №11

Rye is one of the best places to eat in the entire Kansas City metro area. I have never been disappointed in a meal there. It is one of those rare places whose menu is good from top to bottom. Their appetizers, salads, entrees, sides, desserts, and drinks are all among the best in KC. And I want to add again that their drinks are incredible. Their bartenders are constantly trying different things, experimenting, aging liquor in casks with different things... I have gone there many times for just drinks, though I usually end up eating something because I can't ignore the food.

Review №12

Stopped in for lunch, and am glad we did- my company and i had a great experience the interior design was done well, with a country / modern vibe. Music was retro for but fell right in in this chic restuarant. Now lastly- the food! I ordered chicken and dumplings and were fantastic. It was a large, delicious portion - composed of all fresh ingredients. Server barely let a glass of water near its bottom, as he was very responsive with keeping the water cold, and filled -- I appreciate that. Overall it was a very tasteful experience and If I lived in Kansas I would frequent here!

Review №13

Summary: an average food experience with great service, fell a bit short of our expectations along with a few deal breakers so unlikely to return but worth trying. We had a wonderful server, Mike, wait on our table of 4 on a Saturday night. He was attentive and caring, and all of the food coming out was perfectly timed. We started our meal with caesar salads, fried green tomatoes with rock shrimp, and gazpacho. Definitely enjoyed the appetizers. For entrees, we ordered the KC strip, filet mignon, chicken pasta, and the half order of fried chicken. Worth mentioning was the KC strip which was pretty good but way too salty. The filet had a great flavor and was cooked well, but something about the cut just wasn't as juicy as you'd normally find at a quality restaurant which was a bit disappointing. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was their "famous fried chicken". I ordered the mixed half option. The breast and drumstick were both almost entirely bare - I mean literally no skin on the majority of the cut. The flavor was still good, and the breast was not dry but I wish I had gotten more of the actually fried chicken part. The other cuts - wings in particular - were terribly under-seasoned and didn't have much flavor. I did find a piece of hair in one of the wings, and that's when I stopped eating my dinner - relied on some extra bread to fill me up for the night. We had other plans for dessert but have heard that they have some delicious options to end your night on a high note. Possibly missed out there. Overall, it was worth visiting but won't be a place we will be itching to come back to.

Review №14

On a business trip with other colleagues, we choose another restaurant in the area that ended up being an hour wait. We did not want to wait so our search began. We found Rye and this is. Gem!! A must do for the experience and of course the food. The appetizers were fantastic, the corn bread was the best I've had. Don't miss the opportunity to have a great meal at Rye. And of course the cocktails are extremely good. Come with an idea of what you want in a drink and the bartenders will make it!!

Review №15

We went to there get a dinner one night. The host was just on her phone, probably on some game. She is never off her phone while the whole time greeting us even when we leaving she is still on her phone. Thanks for her respecting! Won't go back any more.

Review №16

For whatever reason, I, nor my husband, liked the spicey chicken sammich. We can't put our finger on it, it just g so a weird

Review №17

I celebrated my PhD today in this fine place. I am glad to say that it was a enjoyable evening and the restaurant was surely the reason for this happy meeting. The team contributed in a sweet way, the cooking was delicious and my guests were so pleased. We shall absolutely visit again for more events. Thank you very much.

Review №18

Amazing food! Will definitely be coming back next time we are in Kansas City. Service was great. Only complaint was apple pie was cold. I highly recommend fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and salad. Amazing dressing so much flavor!

Review №19

Such a yummy place to grab a casual bite. Known for their fried chicken but lots of good options.

Review №20

Love the food here. Beautiful day for the outdoor seating. Great cocktails, awesome pork rinds, and well worth the time spent. I will always return here

Review №21

I am so disappointed with our visit to Rye Leawood. I really expected better based on my friends recommendations. I think we experienced an off night at this restaurant. However, I think the owners and management would agree with me; off nights should not happen, even on Mondays. My chief complaints: 1. Chicken was dry/over cooked. 2. Our server was uninterested, inattentive, and distant.I don't think these pictures do justice to how dry this bird was, the dark meat was awful as well, but moderately better, we ate the dark meat there, only had the white meat left to take pics at home. Our toast with goat cheese was also burnt to a crisp (to be fair 90% of the bread was toasted perfectly, however half of one whole piece was completely charred).

Review №22

Truly world class cocktail bar with excellent foodie level food as well. So knowledgeable and welcoming. From Manhattan's to Rob Roy's to Negroni's to the myriad drink optimizing uses of Amaro aperitif/liqueurs. You cant stump these professionals. If you like quality food and drink go it's worth it

Review №23

Great ambience with a menu to match. Very nice!! It's always a good sign when a restaurant is busy on a weeknight. Strongly recommended.

Review №24

Great food! Wedge salad had just the right amount of everything. Enjoyed the goat cheese and toast, steak was cooked perfectly. Would highly recommend. It's expensive, but worth it!

Review №25

Great food and an awesome server helped us pick a great wine The Pessimist.

Review №26

Service was outstanding, as good as I have had anywhere, food was good but a little pricy....

Review №27

Outstanding, amazing, absolutely wonderful. I can't even put into words how great the food was. Presentation on every thing was exquisite. The bartender was the icing on the proverbial cake.

Review №28

Funky, antique vibe with new American cuisine. Good service, good food, great drinks.

Review №29

Great Food! My wife and I enjoyed their delicious food here. We will visit here again as soon as possible to enjoy yet another cuisine.

Review №30

Great drinks, great appetizers and great friends. Sat outside in September and it was strangely too cool without space heaters.

Review №31

Although food was fantastic and atmosphere was wonderful, we had a pretty poor waitress. She barely checked on us and had a terrible attitude towards us. My dining companion also noticed.

Review №32

Delicious fare and great service with with knowledge about the menu. The wine list was adequate.

Review №33

I came to Rye leawood for my birthday September 19 around 730 was our reservation. the meal was really good, also was the waiter service. But the one bad apple was an employee who was extremely disrespectful once we started to leave. I didn't catch the employees name because I don't believe they wear name tags. but in working in customer service and being a business owner myself I know that with out a solid customer satisfaction that can jeopardize my business and my rapport with my customers. As business owner I know that my customers are a part of me, so if my customers feel disrespected by one of my employees childish gestures I wouldn't be ok with that. So Rye Leawood is a great restaurant. But I don't believe the African American dollar is valued here. Save your money and spend it where you are wanted not overlooked !

Review №34

We sat outside which was the best decision. The view and the environment makes it a must if the day is good enough. I had the chicken hamburger, extremely big, and the spiciness was perfect. Very good service also!

Review №35

First time at Rye this weekend with the wife. The steak was good, the burger, sides and the overall experience was not. Doubt we'll be back.

Review №36

Our server Aubrey was excellent and the Apple pie was really good.

Review №37

Great patio to relax on, with afternoon shade. Michelle was friendly and have good recommendations on the menu for a 1st time guest. Menu was focused with no specials mentions but they have some exciting cocktails.

Review №38

Unique and delicious.Staff was extremely accommodating. We had a business lunch here and they have a great back room.

Review №39

Came into town over the fourth demo Vegas., sister recommended this cool stop. Outstanding service, presentation, delivery, taste..picture and tastebud perfect! You will not be disappointed

Review №40

As a vegetarian the menu options are slim. But they always accommodate with a veggie plate. I love their outdoor seating.

Review №41

Awesome food! The steak was perfect.

Review №42

Really good food and spacious outdoor patio. But the service was slow. Be sure to order right away.

Review №43

I enjoy Rye every time I visit, but this brunch was particularly exceptional. We started with the cinnamon roll (first come first served) which was basically dessert, but so worth it. Make sure you plan ahead so you can have one if you have a sweet toothI had the Biscuits and Gravy and subbed the Hashbrown for the egg. The hashbrown was crispy and went great with the gravy. The biscuits were fluffy, but still dense, but in a good way.My friend had the french toast, which looked great and she thoroughly enjoyed.Service was excellent as always.

Review №44

Awesome drink and food menu! Great service and atmosphere!

Review №45

Best toast and goat cheese in leawood️

Review №46

Great food and service. A little on the pricey side.

Review №47

Chicken & Dumplings. Omg. So delicious! Don't forget to get a cinnamon roll to go. You won't regret it.

Review №48

Did carry out, 2 whole fried chickens for Chiefs game on Sunday. Staff very nice and accommodating.

Review №49

Excellent patio experience! Happy hour prices and a view of the lake!

Review №50

Nice ambiance, service was ok. They forgot a few things we asked for then said some menu selections were not available so we made a second choice then they came back and said the second choice wasn't available so we ended up getting what we wanted it was just a bit weird. Hanger steak was not as juicy as i would have liked and the mac and cheese was bland. Will come back and try again tho

Review №51

We have been here a zillion times and I am never disappointed. Do try the fried green tomatoes- they were totally awesome! Well... have anything with tomatoes this time of won't be disappointed! also - the blueberry pie with honeycomb ice cream was simply divine!! They are great with parties of all shapes and sizes and we routinely bring the kids here. Enjoy!

Review №52

Great lunch menu! Spicy chicken sandwich was perfect

Review №53

A nice out of the way great place for lunch. I had the chance to celebrate a birthday with lunch for my brother-in-law this afternoon. It was busy but not too crowded and not too noisy. The service was very good and we enjoyed the salmon and chicken salad. If you are looking for an upscale lunch this is a great place to try.

Review №54

Simply great. Great food & drinks

Review №55

Went there for Sunday lunch and Restaurant. Week. Tried the fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Breast was a little dry but leg juicy. Green salad generous. Atmosphere casual and service great. Love the Rye blend from Roasterie coffee.

Review №56

We found glass in our food when dining in, I thought I had a chicken bone in my mouth and it was actually broken glass in the cucumber salad. The server was very helpful. When the manager came over he didn't apologize but just asked if we were hurt and said the jar must have chipped as he examined the glass shards I spit out (there were no chips in the jar the salad was in). I was worried other patrons were going to be injured. We were offered a free dessert but in my opinion broken glass in food deserves a comped meal. Will not be returning sadly.

Review №57

Rye has the best cocktails in Johnson county. Hands down.

Review №58

Had an amazing experience at the Plaza location. We had stopped there for drinks before dinner reservations at another restaurant. Tj, Van, Lindsey & Chris delivered such a “wow” experience that we skipped dessert at the place we ate dinner to go & enjoy drinks & dessert at Rye Plaza. Thanks for a great night! We will be back!

Review №59

We ate here with some friends and really enjoyed it. The wedge salad was great, I highly recommend it. I ordered the steak (can't remember exactly which one) and it was good but I wouldn't say it was superior to any other steaks I had eaten. It was a bit pricey for the taste hence the 4 stars. The banana cream pie was AMAZING! Definitely a good way to wrap up the night. Best banana cream pie I've ever had. Overall service was great, food was good, but a little pricey.

Review №60

Holy. This was a fabulous experience. We had goat cheese with honey on fresh bread and blue crab hush puppies. I had the lamb shank and my husband had the famous fried chicken. Really great atmosphere as well.

Review №61

My kids ordered Mothers Day Brunch- $180 for a few pieces of fried chicken, a terrible chicken pot pie, a bunch of salad greens thrown in a box with a few radish slices, and some French Toast, 2 pieces. 3 pieces of pie. Nothing was outstanding. Oh we did get a bottle of sparkling Italian wine and some orange juice for mimosas, that was good. Overrated and overpriced.

Review №62

I call this marvelous place many times because I enjoy the ambiance that is outline this restaurant. The personel is extremely welcoming and experienced. The service is awfully rapid. Needless to say, the food you eat is outstanding. I ate there often and I was always delighted. The cost is decent. I highly suggest this place to my friends and family.

Review №63

Great service, FANTASTIC drinks, Goat Cheese appetizer was incredible. Sunday special chicken was great as well. They have the best Loaded Mac N Cheese!!

Review №64

This good old country boy loves Fried Chicken. Not the commercial variety. At Rye it's done right. Juicy, hit and crispy not greasy. Makes you want to call your momma. At 84 years old my grandson is helping write reviews and this one is 5 SHINING STARS. Farm to table food, served up on a patio in the summer where you can enjoy it.

Review №65

I can't get enough if this place! I enjoy their brunch menu, their farm to table freshness.

Review №66

Went today and was totally disappointed. The coffee was cold along with food luke warm. The cinnamon roll was good but had to ask for them to heat it up. Then when it came out only the icing was warm.Sadly they also do not clean the backs of their chairs where Everyone places their hands getting in and away from table. Not good right now. Also, handing you regular menus. Hope they wipe those down. My assumption was I thought restuarants were supposed to use paper menus as a requirement? They had paper menus when I went there on the 4th, why the chg?Friendly staff, but other items definitely need to be worked on.

Review №67

We had reservations for brunch and got seated within 5mins! We ordered a cinnamon to start and it was freshly baked and really good, even though it lacked cinnamon. We ordered the Rye Breakfast and the hash brown was amazing!! Everything else was very bland. My scrambled eggs had a strange taste to them. Our waiter was very inattentive. We had to ask him 3 times to get us refills before he ever did & he just wasn't very personable. The restaurant itself was clean and cutely decorated. Beware of the bathroom though, it smelled like old sewer. That aside, I'd like to come back for Lunch or Dinner and give it another try!

Review №68

Our table ordered a wedge salad and pulled pork sandwich, Carolina style. I can't speak to the wedge but the sandwich was decent. Strangely my favorite part was the bun. That thing was delicious just by itself! Liked the bbq sauce. It's similar to KC Masterpiece all though not as sweet. I mixed some of their hot sauce in it and that was pretty good. Will probably try the shrimp and grits if I return.

Review №69

Rye is all round fantastic. It's an excellent place for craft mixed drinks, esp bourbon based ones, and has excellent food. The waitress provided some of the best service I've had for awhile - again, the experience was all around fantastic. It is a little pricier but if you're looking for a nicer dinner, look no further.

Review №70

Amazing food and good service along with ambience

Review №71

Great restaurant and service. The chicken and dumplings was the best food item we ordered. My wife said it was the best chicken and dumplings she has ever had. That being said the other food wasn't bad by any means.

Review №72

Was enjoyed had brussel sprouts deviled eggs with a side of whiskey and cornbread.

Review №73

Food was beautiful and delicious, and it arrived amazingly fast! one of the things that I was most impressed about is that they had a baby changing station in the men's bathroom! Thanks guys!I got the ranchero huevos and she got The ride breakfast and the cinnamon roll. That thing is ginormous, fluffy, buttery and not too sweet

Review №74

I love this place. The waiter was super nice and fast. The food is phenomenal and I will be going back so soon. I had the grits and shrimp. My friend had a chicken sandwich. And my other friend had the burnt ins sandwich. We were all extremely satisfied. Visit during lunch. The prices are slightly lower then dinner and there weren't busy.

Review №75

Some of the best bartenders in KC. All the food here is fresh and great spot for lunch.

Review №76

Our favorite spot in Kansas City for brunch! Excellent fried chicken, plus tasty variety of breakfast dishes, steaks and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. The pies and cinnamon rolls are phenomenal as well

Review №77

Amazing patio, fabulous food. Always a great experience.

Review №78

This place lives up to the hype! Good food, superb fried chicken! Even a glass of ice tea tasted fresh brewed. No stale "off the warmer plate" servings here. Freshly made and delicious... just go already!

Review №79

The drinks are really good, the food is delish.

Review №80

This place is my favorite. I go to a lot of restaurants but to this place I constantly return again and again. The team is very attentive and the cooking they serve is so tasty. I never decline to have a decent dinner in this restaurant. I highly recommend this place.

Review №81

Bought 3 slices of pie from Rye-Leawood. My question is, WHERE'S THE OTHER HALF?? The container is even half-full. Guess the container manufacturer knows what a slice of pie is supposed to look like. At $7.50 a slice, I realized I could have bought a WHOLE pie for the cost of 3 slices. Was never advised, just found out when I returned home. Decent pie, but not for the cost. Will NEVER return.

Review №82

Very unimpressed. My drink was good (mulled wine). Service was not good. Waited 20 minutes after our reservation. Then waited another 10-15 before the server even acknowledged us. Saw her once during the meal. Food was good, but not $150 dinner good. To top it off our server threw away the food we asked to have boxed. I probably wouldn't return.

Review №83

Great service, good atmosphere had read other great reviews of rye & decided to try it too. Ordered several dishes that were shared & lived up to the reviews bieng delicious. With the exception of the biscuits and gravy, it cost them a star in my book as the biscuits were dry & the gravy for the most part fairly bland.

Review №84

Love this place but, it can be a bit pricy and I'm not a fan of the recent menu changes.

Review №85

The food's always excellent, made from scratch and fresh. The service is top notch. One of my top 5 fave restaurants, we eat here all the time. Saw a sign they're serving brunch all week now, so that will never get old.

Review №86

Always have to stop at rye when visiting home. This place gets better every visit! Atmosphere, food, service and drinks are outstanding.

Review №87

The place is well maintained and cozy. It has good atmosphere and is always packed, service is great. The food and drinks are very good and priced accordingly.

Review №88

Great food, thoughtful staff

Review №89

So refreshing! Great Chef and seasonings used...baked meats are tender and moist! Deliciously different.

Review №90

Enjoyed the shrimp and crab boil tonight.

Review №91

Food (fried chicken) was well-prepared. Noisy, just s big barn. Prices were higher than expected. Basically a new York diner. Service was excellent.

Review №92

Fantastic outdoor area seating, great food and service.

Review №93

A restaurant masterpiece! Chef Colby, owner and chef at the restaurant, is one of very few chefs to earn the prestigious James Beard award - and that is made very apparent by the quality and flavor of food served at this location. Seriously a 5 star twist on classic American plates.A little pricy but worth every penny - and some! Friendly staff, excellent food, and an overall good experience.

Review №94

Ate breakfast on patio overlooking the lake. Very nice

Review №95

Terrific service. Fun atmosphere. Many options to please most palates. Tasty pies. Highly recommend the deviled eggs.

Review №96

We had our office holiday party here. We had about 25 people. Food was great! Service was awesome.

Review №97

We couldn't decide what to start off with, so we got both the Whipped Goat Cheese ($11), with Speckman local honey, sea salt, and herbs, served with grilled toast. We loved it--the honey and cheese combination was perfect and balanced well. I used the bread to scrape everything out of that jar. And we ordered the Blue Crab Hushpuppies ($16) for six hushpuppies made from crab, bell pepper, celery, with lemon and a spicy aioli. I fought my date for them (she won). I had a hard time deciding whether to dip or not to dip as the hushpuppies were prepared and cooked perfectly with great crab-flavors.

Review №98

Great atmosphere and service on a lovely patio over looking a nice pond with a blue heron having his fish lunch. Nice wine selection and food was delicious especially how they prepared their asparagus with onions that I believe we're grilled.

Review №99

Love the atmosphere and excellent service. Food was great except the spicy chicken sandwich is NOT spicy, it's more on the sweet side. Will be back to try more entree's.

Review №100

Awesome experience and food. Good comfort food, American style that doesn't try to outsmart some traditional dishes. Had the fried chicken which included some of the best gravy I've ever had in my entire life. Sides were excellent and choices were plentiful. Very cool atmosphere and not over the top hipster as unfortunately a lot of the farm to table places can get. Definitely recommend and will be back soon to get some steak. Had the dessert, pie was awesome. Apparently the chef is a NYC pastry expert. Will definitely go again!
